Stones of Remembrance

From time immemorial we have stacked stones.  Cultures have stacked stones to make walls, to mark paths, to create shelters, and to build altars.  In the Old Testament there are a number of stories where the Israelites stacked stones in remembrance of a God-driven event or occurrence.  There is a great story in the Book of Joshua where God parted the river Jordan for the Israelites to cross into the promised land.  He instructed Joshua to designate twelve men to each pick up a large stone from the middle of the river.  When they reached that evening’s destination, they were instructed to stack the stones into a memorial as a sign of what God had done for them.  God explained that years later, when people passed by, they would see these twelve smooth river stones and ask about them.  The perpetual questions and answers preserve the story for all time.

This morning we closed our service by stacking stones.  One by one the circle of students came forward, stacked their stone and shared what they were thankful for over the past year.  So, if you ever visit Good Soil Academy and see a stack of stones, feel free to ask a student and they’ll tell you what God did for them this past year.

For His Kingdom,
Dean
